When should you get a hearing test?

6 Million people could benefit from a hearing aid
Hearing loss is common, particularly as you get older. It could be caused by something that can be easily treated, often noticed more by other people before you. There are lots of possible causes of hearing loss, see our audiologist at Wellear if you have concerns.
Causes of hearing loss
It's not always easy to tell if you're losing your hearing. Common signs include:
Difficulty hearing other people clearly and misunderstanding what they say, especially in noisy places.
Being bothered by background noise.
Often asking others to speak more slowly, clearly and loudly.
You could be asking people to repeat themselves.
Watching TV at a loud volume.
Staying clear of some social settings.
When you struggle to hear properly, you can feel tired or stressed from having to concentrate while listening.
Ringing in the ears, known as tinnitus.
1 in 6 of the UK adult population is affected by hearing loss
Many people with hearing loss also have tinnitus which affects 1 in 10 adults. They may also have balance difficulties.

1
Diagnosis
Our audiologist will ask you a few health related questions to better understand the level of your hearing loss. With an otoscope the audiologist will examine the health of your ear canal and ear drum. If required they may suggest ear wax removal.

2
Treatment
During the hearing test the audiologist will play sounds at different pitches through a pair of headphones. You will need to press a button every time you hear a sound. They will then ask you to wear a special headband that will test how well you hear sounds through vibration.

3
Aftercare & advice
After the test the audiologist will explain your results and offer advice on how to proceed depending on the level of hearing loss. We may suggest hearing aids and can advise on the type best suited for you.
